(Reviews from the
artSMart team currently in Grahamstown at the National Arts Festival)
A very pleasant surprise. (Review by Keith Millar)
When attending a festival such as the National Arts Festival
in Grahamstown, one should expect a surprise or two from time to time. Well,
the first surprise today was that I had to attend a stand-up comedy show at 10h00
in the morning. The second surprise was that the comedian I was to see was not
one of the usual festival regulars, but rather one of the country’s few female
exponents of the art of stand-up comedy.
It must be said that on both counts they turned out to be
very pleasant surprises, indeed.
Angel Campey is a personable young lady who is very quick-witted,
off-beat and self-assured. Her style is intelligent and nicely feminine but has
just the right amount of irony and cynicism to add spice to the performance.
Above all, and most important, is the fact that she is very funny.
She covers a diverse spectrum of issues during her show
including the use of social media, guardian angels, teaching English to Korean
kids, the zombie apocalypse and boyfriends. She interacts pleasantly with
audience, teasing them but never getting offensive.
Of course, the biggest issue she talks about - and the one
after which her show is named - is growing up with the name of Angel.
However, other than the comedy value of the name, she seems
to be a confident young woman who has built up a considerable reputation in a
short time period of time. Her show is produced by comedy legend Nik Rabinowitz
and he has helped to ensure that she does not need to stand back for anyone in
South Africa’s vibrant comedy scene.
