(Simphiwe Dana)
In celebration of Africa Month this May, The Playhouse
Company will host Africa Celebrates, a weekend of visual and performing arts on
May 6 and 7 under the themes social cohesion and unity in diversity.
After various workshops and other events to be confirmed
shortly, the weekend will culminate with a star-studded bang on May 7 with the Africa Celebrates Concert featuring
smash-hit South African act, Mi Casa, mega-star Tresor, Afro-soul sensation
Simphiwe Dana, DJ Happy Gal, the Burundian Drummers, and dance group Dance
Movement.
This professionally-staged concert will be presented in the Playhouse
Opera and promises a unique, live theatrical experience that is not to be
missed by music lovers!
Renowned, multi-award-winning house band Mi Casa has five
hit albums to their name, and many chart-topping hits under their collective
belt – these South African super-stars must be seen!
Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tresor
(‘Treasure’ in French) moved to South Africa eight years ago. Initially
compelled to work as a car guard, he is now an accomplished and extremely
well-known award-winning musician.
One of South Africa’s most soulful singers, Simphiwe Dana is
celebrated worldwide for her impressive vocal prowess. Likened to the late,
great Miriam Makeba and Busi Mhlongo, her albums have scooped numerous awards
and nominations both in South Africa and internationally. Her music is now part
of the curriculum at several prestigious institutions, including Oxford
University in England.
Also in the line-up are the hugely popular DJ Happy Gal, the
Burundian Drummers and Wentworth-based hip-hop outfit, Dance Movement.
This concert will be directed by Aubrey Sekhabi, with
musical direction by Victor Masondo. South African Living Legends Don Mattera, Abigail
Kubheka, Dorothy Masuka, Theo Bophela, Samson Mazibuko and Dr Joseph Shabalala
will also be honoured by The Playhouse Company at this glittering concert which
will be MC’d by Dr Gcina Mhlophe and Alex Mthiyane.
The concert on May 7 starts at 19h00 in the Playhouse Opera.
Tickets R80 and R100 (depending on seat position) booked through Computicket.
