FOM: DANIEL CIOBANU

Friends of Music’s next recital will take place on February 21 and will feature Daniel Ciobanu.

Daniel Ciobanu is 25-year-old Romanian born pianist who now lives in Berlin. He graduated with a Master’s degree. At the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, he won all the major internal Piano Competitions, being the first pupil to achieve such an honour. He won 1st Prize at the 2016 UNISA International Piano Competition in Pretoria, South Africa. He also won the Special prize for best Classical Sonata, and first prize at the 2016 Sheepdrove Intercollegiate Piano Competition in the UK.

He has performed with many orchestras around the world and most recently won first prize at the 2016 BNDES International Piano Competition held in Rio de Janeiro.

His programme will include Silvestri – Bacanale; Chopin - Andante Spianatto & Grande Polonaise Brillante; Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition; Enescu–Tocatta & Pavane;  Medtner - 2 Fairy tales op.20 and Prokofiev- Sonata no.7.

The Prelude Performer for the evening will be soprano Zama Mkhwanazi. A Grade 11 music student at Northlands Girls High School, she is a member of the KZN Youth Choir. She is also a soloist for both her school and the Youth Choir as well as in theatre productions.

Her programme will include Plaisir d’amour – Johann –Paul Martini; Reflection from Walt Disney’s Mulan – Matthew Wilder, and O Mio Babbbino Caro by Puccini. She will be accompanied by Bobby Mills.

The concert takes place at 19h30 on February 21 at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 K E Masinga (Old Fort) Road, Durban. Tickets R100 (R80 FOM Members; R20 Orchestral / Students)
