The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is
proud to present the first of a series of instrumental showcases planned over
the course of the year. The Jazz Voice
Showcase by students of Debbie Mari and Lihle Ngidi on May 24, 2017, at 18h00.
After a successful debut run of showcase
concerts at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music that featured students from
the UKZN music program last year, this initiative continues into 2017. The
proceeds from the showcase concerts accrue to the Ronnie Madonsela Scholarship.
Jazz Voice students present Jazz standards,
selections from the American songbook and South African songs in a programme
featuring undergraduate students from the UKZN Jazz Studies programme singing
ballads and bossa novas to swing songs and South African selections. The vocal
jazz ensemble, UKZN Voices, will sing Charlie Chapman’s Smile, When I Fall In Love and Omagugu Makhathini’s arrangement of Riverside.
The participants for the evening include
first, second and third year students. Neli Msomi, Zama Buthelezi, Siphelele
Mthiyane, Sinenhlanhla Mazibuko, Keorapetse Kolwane and more. This concert will
be followed by The Piano Showcase on May 31.
The
Jazz Voice Showcase takes place on May 24 at 18h00 (doors
open at 17h30). General admission R70 (R45 pensioners, R20 students). The
Centre for Jazz and Popular music (CJPM) is situated on Level 2, Shepstone
Building at UKZN Howard College Campus.
