SA ROY & FOREST JAM BAND

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will presents SA ROY and the Forest Jam Band with special guest Madala Kunene on May 16, 2017.

SA ROY and the Forest Jam Band were born out of a 2015 gathering with local and international musicians in Madagascar. For their 2017 tour, SA ROY are collaborating with South African/Swiss Forest Jam Band and special guest Madala Kunene.

The music of Madagascar and South Africa made them experience a very special atmosphere. The magical musical collaborations unfolded during their six weeks of work with the Malagasy Acapella trio SA ROY. It prompted them to record their debut album Pelakolo and to form this international group that is touring Southern Africa in 2017.

The Madagascar based Acapella trio’s leader, Soaraza Patrice Thomas, is a talented singer/song writer, dancer and multi-instrumentalist. Ando Pra, the second voice in the trio, has earned his nickname Micheal Jackson for his great voice and dance routine. Damy Sinaotsy always stuns the audience with his baritone voice.

SA ROY’s debut album Pelakolo tells the story of three young men who grew up together in the Androy region on the Southern tip of the island of Madagascar. SA ROY’s musical style is influenced by their vocal training which includes Acapella, mandolin, acoustic guitar, traditional percussion playing and traditional Tandroy dance.

The exchange, sharing and experience they gained during a collaboration project with Forest Jam in 2015 gave them the opportunity to improve their musical style. Soaraza Patrick Thomas, the songwriter, talks about friendship and hardship, addresses corruption and exploitation of their natural resources. He sings about the crime of having their livestock stolen, climatic changes resulting in famine. Soaraza’s song about his ancestor shows deep respect and his love songs are beautiful in their simplicity.

Join SA ROY with Forest Jam: Mattthias Abächerli (bass & violin), Fabio Meier (drums and kalabash), Solomon Willy (electric guitar), and special guest Madala Kunene (acoustic guitar and vocal) on May 16, 2017. Doors open 17h30 and the music starts at 18h00 at The Centre for Jazz & Popular Music (CJPM).

Tickets R70 (R45 pensioners, R20 students) will be available at the door. The Centre for Jazz & Popular Music (CJPM) is situated at Level 2 Shepstone Building at UKZN Howard College Campus, Durban.
