YALE UNIVERSITY GLEE CLUB CHOIR FOR KZNPO

(The Yale University Glee Club)

Music lovers will be in for a treat when the world acclaimed 80-strong Yale University Glee Club from the USA joins forces with the KZN Philharmonic and soloists to perform Beethoven’s splendid Mass in C major, Op 86 to open the KZN Philharmonic Winter Concert Season on June 1 in the Playhouse Opera.

The season opens with a very special bumper concert! The acclaimed Yale University Glee Club Choir from the USA led by Dr Jeffrey Douma, professor of conducting at the Yale School of Music, will be doing a whistle-stop visit to Durban as part of an extensive nation-wide South African tour.

The Yale Glee Club is an 80-voice chorus of undergraduate women and men based at Yale University, and currently in its 155th season. It is one of the world’s most travelled collegiate choruses, having appeared before enthusiastic audiences in every major US city and abroad on six continents.

Glee Clubs, the name given to musical or choir groups, have become an American school and university tradition made globally popular through the popular TV series, Glee, which follows a group of students in the fictitious McKinley High School.

Since the autumn of 2003, Jeffrey Douma has served as Director of the Yale Glee Club, hailed under his direction by The New York Times as “one of the best collegiate singing ensembles, and one of the most adventurous.” He also serves, where he teaches in the graduate choral programme, as founding Director of the Yale Choral Artists and as Artistic Director of the Yale International Choral Festival.

The Yale Glee Club will be joined by four vocalist soloists: Nozuko Teto (soprano), Violina Anguelov (mezzo-soprano), Wayne Mkhize (tenor) and Mthunzi Nokubeka (baritone).

Also on the programme will be Belgian pianist Liebrecht Vanbeckenvoort ,a laureate of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition and a celebrate Steinway artist, who takes the spotlight as the season’s first soloist.

The KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra returns to the Durban Playhouse Opera for its four week Winter Symphony Season of sublime world class music from June 1 until 22, 2017.

The KZN Phil continues its primary mission of bringing excellence in music making to the province of KZN. The Winter Season features top South African and international musicians in an eclectic programme of amazing music. “We are committed to bringing the highest quality concerts to Durban thereby enriching the city and province through music,” says Bongani Tembe, CEO and Artistic Director of the KZN Philharmonic.
