Friends of Music will present a recital by Olga Scheps titled
Power and Soulfulness: the Poet of the
Piano on November 20.
Scheps was born in Moscow in 1986, the daughter of two
pianists. She discovered the instrument for herself at the age of four. The
family moved to Germany in 1992. At an early age she had already developed her
own unique style of keyboard playing, which combines intense emotiveness and
powerful expressivity with extraordinary pianistic technique.
Scheps is a Steinway Artist and is regarded as one of the
up-and-coming soloists today. She has appeared with many of the leading
orchestras around the world. Her solo recitals are also very popular with
audiences and she is also an acclaimed and
passionate chamber music performer.
This season, she made her debut in Israel and performed
numerous concerts with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. She will also appear
in South Africa for the first time to perform with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra
and the JPO.
Since 2010, Scheps has been an exclusive Sony Classical
artist. She has recorded several critically acclaimed albums.
Her programme will include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano
Sonata No. 9 in A minor K310; Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 7 in D
major Op. 10 No. 3; Igor Stravinsky’s Trois mouvements de Petrouchka; Alexander
Scriabin’s Valse Op. 38 and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite Op. 71a
(arranged by Mikhael Plentev).
The recital takes place at 19h30 on November 20, 2018, at
the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 KE Masinga (Old Fort) Road, Durban. Tickets R120 (R100
