DIFF SELECTS FILMS WITH THE THEME “FRAMING THE FUTURE, CINEMA UNLEASHED”

(Above: “Murder in Paris” - traces the motives for the assassination of anti-Apartheid activist Dulcie September)

The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts will host the Durban International Festival (DIFF) from July 22 to August 1, 2021. This year, for its 42nd edition, the festival curated a film programme that focuses on narratives that will speak hope for tomorrow.

The programme

The programming team received over 3,000 films, and after an intense selection process, the festival has curated a film programme consisting of over 120 shorts, documentaries and feature films. With the theme Framing the Future, Cinema Unleashed, the plots in the selected films, through different lenses, provide meaningful solutions on how to adapt to our dynamic and ever-changing environment. The programme includes several films that offer solutions to questions that haven’t been asked yet, broadening our viewpoints and allowing for robust critical discourse.

"The Durban International Film Festival has been a platform that celebrates a legacy of supporting South African and African filmmakers as well as our partnership with a global film industry. Programming DIFF 2021 was fascinating, given the challenges faced in 2020 globally across the different industries that contribute to the film landscape. The diversity in the narratives in the submissions is a testament to the resilience shown by filmmakers who continued to work their craft. As is every year, selection is a daunting task, to which the programming team took to diligently and as it is for me, yearly, the heartbreak that comes with not being able to screen more films than allotted. We hope that the selections, a culmination of months of hard work, will speak to our audiences as much as they have moved us.” says Head of Programming Chipo Zhou.

Partnerships

At the heart of the Durban International Film Festival is a mission to enable partnerships that aim to strengthen the film industry and create opportunities for African, and newer voices.

Encounters Documentary Film Festival will co-premiere four African documentaries in partnership with DIFF.

-Murder in Paris, directed by Enver Samuels, a political crime-thriller that traces the motives for the assassination of anti-Apartheid activist Dulcie September.

-I Am Here, where we meet the phenomenal 98-year old Ella Blumenthal through the eyes of the director Jordy Sank.

-The Colonel’s Stray Dogs, a profile of political activist Ashur Shamis, who lives with a million-dollar bounty on his head after a lifetime in Muammar Gadaffi’s crosshairs, directed by Ashur’s father, Khalid Shamis.

-The Last Shelter, by Malian director Ousmane Samassekoou, in which we journey to the Malian city of Goa on the edge of the breathtaking Sabel Dester, where audiences get an inside look into the infamous House of Migrants.

-Zinder, directed by Aicha Macky, is a town in Niger, where in the impoverished area of Kara-Kara, which used to be the lepers’ district, a culture of gang violence reigns.

-In I am Samuel, directed by Pete Murimi, we are given a window into the life of Kenya’s LGBQTI community where Samuel, a gay Kenyan man, has to balance his duty to his family with the care of his partner.

The missions to create inclusion in the film industry is emphasised through a robust community engagement programme titled isiPhethu. This year, the programme will host various online workshops and seminars. Additionally, through valuable partnerships, some films by up-and-coming filmmakers will be screened as part of the DIFF programme. One of these partnerships is the one with Social Transformation and Empowerment Projects (STEPS). This non-profit media company works with documentary film to connect filmmakers, audiences, and organisations, giving marginalised and disadvantaged communities a voice to inspire social change.

The recent Mzansi in the time of Covid-19 project, a collection of four documentary short films on Covid-19 that engages diverse audiences in open discussions about the impact of the virus on South African individuals and communities, will screen at DIFF. These films are Lindela under Lockdown directed by Sihle Hlophe; Schools Shut Down directed by Kastarine Kgola; Jeanette Makes Masks directed by Nadine Cloete, and Lefu – The Funeral directed by Omelga Mthiyane.

The entire programme for DIFF2021 will be announced on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.

This year’s Durban International Film Festival is presented with support from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts & Culture, National Film and Video Foundation and the KZN Film Commission.

I LOVE A SHOW TUNE!

Singer, actress, pianist, choir director and vocal coach Judith Hawthorn reveals her passion for Musical Theatre performance in her new show I Love A Show Tune! celebrating her life in music with a dazzling array of classic Broadway show songs.

Accompanied by Jacques Heyns on piano, Hawthorn transports her audience to the wonderful world of Musical Theatre with much-loved hits from The Sound of Music and Oklahoma to My Fair Lady and Beauty and the Beast, throwing in her own nostalgic salute to the great Victor Borge for good measure!

Devised and directed by Paul Spence, the show will run a Tina’s Hotel in Kloof from June 4 to 6, 2021. Hawthorn’s love for Musical Theatre songs shines through as she shares her childhood musical memories. Shot through with comedic flair, I Love A Show Tune! is charming, nostalgic and funny, as well as deeply heart-warming for audiences who enjoy the music of American song-writing greats such as Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin.

A classically-trained pianist, Hawthorn turned to Musical Theatre in her 30’s and performed professionally in productions including The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Guys and Dolls and The Man from La Mancha. Her richly varied music teaching career in schools across KZN from Curro Hillcrest Christian Academy to The Wykeham Collegiate and Durban Girls High also includes a social upliftment choral programme for the Drakensberg Boys Choir School.

As well as her very personal selection from the golden age of Broadway musicals, expect to hear songs from other favourite shows like Little Women, Sweet Charity and Gigi as well as a virtuoso showstopper from the recent Mary Poppins The Stage Musical.

I Love a Show Tune! appeals to all who love sincere musical theatre story-telling and gorgeous melodies. You’ll want to singalong to every golden show tune with Judith.

NOSIHE RELEASES EMOTIONS LIVE EP

(Right: Nosihe, wearing Savage Mageba outfit)

Durban-based vocalist and songwriter Nosihe is set to release her latest music in the form of an EP titled Emotions Live EP. The EP is available on Itunes and her website (www.nosihe.com) for presales.

This project, recorded live at the Centre for Jazz & Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban (South Africa), sees Nosihe explore the emotions one experiences in life, love and relationships. The project is released as a five-track EP accompanied by a concert film, recorded on the day the EP was filmed and recorded. Backed by her trusted band consisting of bass guitarist Freeman Gumede, drummer Lesedi Tlholoe, pianist Sanele Phakathi and trumpet player Thabo Sikhakhane, the vocalist bravely delivers a new, yet nostalgic, project that pays homage to the art of live music and African jazz at a time when technology continues to overwhelm the raw authenticity that can always be experienced from the beauty of live music.

“We’re in a world where everything is curated and should be in its perfect and finished form. I want to bring people along the messy road because that is life. At the moment, my music is not in any genre, (so) I want people to get an opportunity to listen to it unedited and grow with me as my sound evolves and grows too”, says Nosihe.

Emotions is the official follow-up to her experimental, unplugged Motions Mixtape project, released in 2020.

As a musician who finds herself at the intersection of soul, jazz, blues and even pop music, the Emotions Live EP represents a project and journey that sees Nosihe coming into her own as an emerging African musician with global ambitions. Creatively inspired by visual artist Dr Ester Mahlangu - who Nosihe beautifully reinterprets on the album’s cover art - like the trailblazing Dr Mahlangu, the project represents a moment in time when she chose to let go of stereotypes and limiting boxes and simply focus on making music for her audience and her peace of mind.

Musically, the project draws from iconic live albums such as Letha Mbulu & Caiphus Semenya (Live), Mariam Makeba (Live at Bern’s Salonger, Stockholm, Sweden), Erykah Badu’s Live and the classic Busi Mhlongo & Jabu Khanyile Live at the Market Theatre.

The full Emotions Live EP can be purchased on Itunes or www.nosihe.com, and the concert film is available for purchase and/or streaming on Apple Music

ANDRIES BOTHA: “IT TAKES EVERYTHING… ”

(Above: Gallery view including History has an aspect of oversight in progressive blindness
(2004); Fallen man (2018) and What is a home without a Father (1994).)

An exhibition titled: “it takes everything… ” by internationally-renowned, Durban-based artist, Andries Botha, Curated by Janine Zagel and Jessica Bothma, has just opened at the new sculpture precinct: Ammazulu Gardens and Sculpture Precinct in Kloof.

Born and located in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Botha lectured at the Durban Institute for Technology for over 30 years. Over a period of 45 years he has paid attention to the consequences of the presence and absence of the emotional and historical narrative that has shaped himself and the South African landscape. His describes his work as also being a personal tribute to his observations of the tenderness and destruction of masculinity within the context of a single and collective human journey in the complex landscape that we have created as home in South Africa.

His work over the last 45 years exists within the geography of desire and the struggle for home, to make, to hold, to feel, to see, to be, to imagine, to respond, to become and to leave. It is believed that wisdom is the capacity to hold two contradictory ideas of hope and despair in one's mind simultaneously; this wisdom is expressed as sculpture, installation and concept. There is a stillness in the magnitude and elegance of committing a life to work; to create.

(Left: “Sleeping man” fragment from Afrikaner circa 2014 (2014) by Andries Botha. Acrylic on canvas, landscape in the manner of Pierneef; Material One; mild steel; 3D printed figure in Supawood; artificial landscape turf. This installation is a continuation of its predecessor Africaander circa 1600)

Botha's "menswees" (humanity), his conscience and his struggle for "ukuzizwa usekhaya" (belonging) present us with the haunting pursuit for truth and beauty through the duality of indigenous nature and classical form. The works are cultural and historical documents produced in South Africa that reflect on the grace and trauma of our humanity.

The expansive themes traverse binaries such as: power and helplessness; gender and violence; migration, identity and belonging; and our mark on the environment.

The exhibition will be on semi-permanent display and will be open for viewing to the public: Monday to Wednesday – Closed; Thursday to Sunday 10h00 to 16h00. There is the Ping Pong café on the premises for light refreshments.

Access to the Ammazulu Gardens and Sculpture Precinct is through the gate at 84-88 Kloof Falls Road, Kloof. An entry fee of R50 per person will apply and children under the age of 10 may enter for free.

CLASH OF THE DIVAS: REVIEW

(Above: Cat Simoni & Lucy Tops)

They blew me away from the very beginning … All round a hugely enjoyable experience. (Review by Caroline Smart)

The latest production at Rhumbelow Theatre featured Cat Simoni and Lucy Tops in Clash of the Divas. These are two extremely talented performers equally matched in their vocal singing skills, versatility across the genres and their capacity for easy-going humour.

While Simoni is well-known by KZN audiences, this is the first time we have seen Tops, a Capetonian actress and vocalist. Their cabaret show at The Kalk Bay Theatre Cat & Lucy! Divine Divas/Clash of the Divas was a major hit.

Wearing sparkling and glamorous costumes, they presented a highly varied programme which ranges from well-known 80s numbers, rock to classics, swing to soul – we even get the Wedding March, William Tell and a snippet of Katchachurian! They blew me away from the very beginning.

The pair work extremely well together - boasting about their careers in cabaret and musical theatre which has seen them performing around the world. There are lots of fun moments with mock arguments and amusing interjections in songs such as Well, Did you Ever? They also altered I Will Survive a bit to focus on Covid!

Both have impressive vocal ranges, occasionally reaching impressively high notes which couldn’t fail but get a major response from the audience. Tops showed her power in Yellow Brick Road while Simoni displayed her sensitive side in Creep in F.

Simoni described herself as a youngster as “Too Westville to be a rock chick” and was “a little bit of a nerd”. Absolutely no sign of that now. Having trained in opera at the University of KZN, she also proves that she’s just as good a pianist as a singer when she takes to the keyboard.

Tops brought the house down with her rendition of Otto Titsling and Simoni delivered much humour and sexy movement in Patricia the Stripper. More amusement came in Dance Monkey in which they accurately imagined well-known stars like Celine Dion, Lilly Allen, Toni Braxton, Dolly Parton and Shakira handling it.

Their Bohemian Rhapsody was splendid and a highlight of the show.

Simoni dedicated their final number, Abba’s Thank You for the Music, to Roland Stansell who runs the Rhumbelow circuit, for his dedication and perseverance in keeping musical theatre alive.

The lighting added to the sparkle of the show and the sound was well-balanced. Clash of the Divas is a perfect length, leaving you wanting more but full of appreciation for what you’ve had. All round a hugely enjoyable experience.

Unfortunately, this will be Simoni’s last show as she is leaving soon for the UK but maybe she can be persuaded to return some time in the future to do a tour with Tops of this great production.

UNSPOILT KZN MIDLANDS SCENERY & HOSPITALITY VENUES

(Above: Scenic views abound along the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Meander)

Alan Paton, the South African anti-Apartheid activist and author wrote in his acclaimed novel, Cry, the Beloved Country: "There is a lovely road that runs from Ixopo into the hills. These hills are grass-covered and rolling, and they are lovely beyond any singing of it….if there is no mist, you look down on one of the fairest valleys of Africa."

Paton’s description of the picturesque landscape was penned more than 70 years ago, and while he may have referred to the Ixopo region, he could well have been extolling the beauty of the neighbouring, unspoilt KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

Just over an hour away from Durban, between Pietermaritzburg and Drakensberg, is a delightful region filled with stretches of farmland, quaint little towns full of charm, a marvellous road of arts and crafts, restaurants brimming with gastronomic delights and scenic landscapes bordering the sublime known as the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

As you soak up the landscapes, sounds and fresh air of the KZN Midlands, you will quickly realise that this is the ideal place to recharge your soul's batteries in surroundings that resemble God’s canvas.

At the heart of the KZN Midlands is the popular Midlands Meander - an itinerary of art, handicrafts, restaurants and farm holidays – that is a retreat for holidaymakers with many cafes, art galleries, beautiful guesthouses, cheese farms, seamstresses, cobblers, trout farms, potters, weavers and painters who have made this region their home.

The Midlands Meander is now a wonderfully refreshing combination of over 150 places to eat, drink and shop, and stretches from Rietvlei and Curry's Post to Dargle Valley and Fort Nottingham – a total of about 80km of rejuvenating activities.

One of the historical sites in the Midlands Meander is the Nelson Mandela Capture Site on the R103 in Howick. It is one of the most-visited memorial sites in KZN with a visitor centre and a world-renowned sculpture of the peace activist and politician Nelson Mandela, designed by the South African artist Marco Cianfanelli.

Ayanda Nyandeni, tour guide at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, said: “After a year of pandemic-induced lockdowns, people are looking to travel again. I am so excited that leisure tourism is coming back with a bang.

“While natural beauty abounds in the KZN Midlands, people who are looking to travel this winter holidays will also be well-advised to also take in some history linked to our nation’s hard-won freedom.

“The Nelson Mandela Capture Site is a cultural and historical exhibition that is situated at the site at which Nelson Mandela was apprehended for his anti-Apartheid activism acts in August 1952. There is a museum with videos and photographs that will give you goose bumps as the people’s Struggle is retold through sound and images,” adds Nyandeni.

Several owners of hotels, chalets, game lodges and holiday resorts cannot wait to welcome visitors to the KZN Midlands and have posted their amazing specials on TKZN’s website making travel fun and affordable – see www.zulu.org.za

The General Manager of the Midlands Meander, Marian Evans said: “The Midlands Meander is special because it offers its visitors an array of accommodation to choose from, beautiful autumn and cosy winter days, an abundance of wonderful cuisines and countless charming scenic areas to enjoy outdoor activities.

“Parents are now more aware of focusing on creating special memories with their children and we encourage more of these family holidays or day outings together.

“Farms stays with the family is a must; children can enjoy a visit to Endeavour Alpacas - Nirvana Farm, fly-fishing and horse riding.”

Mount Shekinah Country Hotel, near Michaelhouse School, just off the R103 in Balgowan, is a gem and a must-visit destination to include on your bucket list.

The General Manager of the Hotel, Silindokuhle Bhengu, said: “Our location is ideal, private and peaceful, offering visitors’ scenic views and amazing hospitality.

“Guests can enjoy horse-riding within the property, go for a hike or get cosy in the lounge area next to the fireplace.

“We also offer group bookings for those interested in hosting a private dinner event. Whether it's a business luncheon, a casual dinner or a celebration event, our goal is to make every meal a memorable experience.”

For nature enthusiast and adventure seekers Karkloof Canopy Tour, situated in a spectacular valley of the Karkloof Forest Reserve, offers 12 platforms and 10 zip-line slides, the longest of which is 200 metres.

Kai Schulz, Managing Director at Karkloof Canopy Tour said: “The zip-line journey is safe and a fun adventure for people between the ages of six and 80 and over.

“It is the second largest indigenous forest in South Africa and is unique due to the incredible bird life which includes glimpsing emerald cuckoos, Knysna Turaco, a great variety of birds of prey and if you are lucky, the elusive Narina Trogon or endangered Cape Parrots.

“The forest also shelters a variety of mammals, but it is the loud cries and the formidable tree of the Samango monkeys that you will remember best.”

Wine lovers, couples and families will enjoy a trip to Highgate Wine Estate, situated on the R103 near Piggly Wiggly situated in the heart of KZN Midlands producing its very own wines.

Terri Evans, General Manager of Highgate Wine Estate and Piggly Wiggly, said: “The Kassier family purchased the Highgate Farm which was then a small one-hectare vegetable farm.

“Thereafter, the Kassiers saw an opportunity, a need for fresh produce, and the concept of Piggly Wiggly was born.

“From this passion came Highgate Wine Estate, and in 2016, the first commercially produced bottle of wine was bottled and sold exclusively in their winery.

“Highgate now has five hectares of vines with a variety of Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz and visitors can relax and enjoy the wine-tasting and delicious foods.”

This initiative is building on this, further strengthening the collaborations we have grown over the years. This discussion should spark a continued intra-Africa countries film conversation with the possibility of establishing more innovative programmes for African member countries e.g a United Africa Film Festival, which would be owned by the continent's member states and held every year during Africa Month, using the BRICS film festival as a model." says KZNFC CEO, Carol Coetzee.

“We will be drawing insights from industry stalwarts from the different regions across Africa who have a vested interest in the sustainability and continued development of Intra-Africa collaborations. The industry practitioners on the continent have shown a commitment to seeing this idea through, and we are excited to be a part of its birthing,” says curator Chipo Zhou.
