Rhumbelow Theatre Durban will be hosting a return of Steven Stead’s highly popular show Once Upon a Tune from November 19 to 21, 2021.

Accompanied on the piano by the masterful Evan Roberts, Stead will sing a series of songs, all of which tell stories in one way or another, and celebrate the theatre’s power to transform and delight. The songs featured include witty, wicked and whimsical songs by Stephen Sondheim, Jacques Brel, Noel Coward, Jason Robert Brown, Chris de Burgh, Cy Coleman, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kander and Ebb, and others.

Stead says: "I vividly remember going to The Cellar as a youngster and experiencing the magic of real cabaret, as opposed to music revue, with artists like Danielle Pascale, Judy Page and Sam Marais, and I want to explore this very powerful, very rewarding style of theatre myself. I feel that I am the right age to do this now, and with the brilliant Evan Roberts at my side, I feel brave enough to share my life-experience with an audience."

The production is lit by multi award-winning Tina le Roux, with sound design by Jason Bird.

In her review of the show for artSMart last year, Caroline Smart said: “If you like songs from musicals and Noel Coward – especially those with much humour and a strong dramatic content – then don’t miss this one!”

There are only three performances scheduled: November 19 and 20 at 19h00 and November 21 at 14h00.

Tickets are R180 each. Booking is essential at Computicket:

“We would ask that if you are able to please assist us and the performers by donating a higher ticket price,” says Roland Stansell who runs the Rhumbelow Theatre circuit.
