TIDAL AT THE GALLERY

(Work by Jane Digby)

Tidal is a new exhibition opening in the Gallery, Lifestyle Centre in Ballito this Thursday June 2, which honours KZN’s coastline.

“This exhibition celebrates our fragile, magnificent coastline. Twice daily, we witness the miraculous shifting of the tides as they come in and out. Sealife is exposed, then it is submerged all to the rhythm of the moon. We are all one, we are all living beings that live to this rhythm. This exhibition honours the power of the sea and all it gifts us. It is not too late to protect our precious oceans…, ” explains exhibition curator, Jane Digby.

A collaboration of local artists connect and communicate through the visual arts to create this beautiful, poignant exhibition celebrating the treasures of the sea and the magnificent of the coastline.

Leigh Bisset’s two large and poignant installations positioned outside The Studios, explore the use of reclaimed fishing materials. The destructive wake of overfishing to satisfy the greed and consumerism is one of the biggest threats to the health of the seas and their inhabitants. Fish are taken faster than they can naturally replenish, and by-catch of marine life such as turtles, dolphins, etc is senselessly discarded.

(Right: The Manta Ray, a bronze by Robert Rorich)

Robert Rorich has two magnificent bronzes on exhibition: The Manta Ray is displayed as an art piece in the open air this sculpture brings forth the rays’ oceanic majesty into our own mind and home. His second piece is She Down There which imagines the allure of the plump sirenian is in its gentle nature and peaceful pasturing. Because of their docile disposition, they are easily hunted by humans and are often entangled in fishing nets, contributing to their decline and vulnerable status. Half of all proceeds of the sale of the limited edition bronzes will go to dugong conservation.

More than a dozen 2D artiste feature in the exhibition: Jane Digby; Nic Human, Leigh Bisset; Chantelle Hopewell; Lori Schappe Youens; Darylee Ziady; Ali Cockburn; Gift Dlamini; Kim Pereira; Natalie Deeb; Hilary Grant Currie and Ste van der Schyff.

Bring delight to any home); Mervyn Dragsund (the contemporary PET, no fleas, no snoring, no mission – just pure delight); Phumlani Nwayo (cows on the beach!); Zinhle my Basket Shop (emerging business woman and stylist Zinhle will be exhibiting her baskets) Favordot Intl (an NGO of teenagers making ottomans from recycled tyres to pay for education) and Scent Africa (handmade candles, diffusers by young entrepreneur Pearl Khambule making practical art in candles).

I HEART MARKET

(Above: Tree of Life wall hanging)

What’s hot this winter? June’s I heart Market offers market-goers a range of heart-warming bespoke and artisanal fare just in time for Durban’s legendary “slightly-cooler-than-summer” mid-winter!

Taking place this Saturday, June 4 from 08h30 to 14h00 on the Moses Mabhida Stadium Lawns, the I heart Market, is not just a “pop-in and out” affair, it’s not only designed to make you want to take a leisurely stroll around the various stalls, make contact with the artists, crafters, and artisans who have created their wares with love and care, but to also relax in the sun and try out the delicious culinary fare on offer.

Some highlights to warm the cockles of your heart include Wicked Waffles - authentic Belgian waffles that are cooked on-site on a gas-fired waffle machine. They are golden delicious outside and soft inside and topped with fresh cream or ice cream. This is a tasty toasty option to warm up your taste buds, before trying out other scrumptious eats.

(Right: Savage Jewellery Rings)

Looking for gifts? Savage Jewellery is an iconic long-time ‘I heart” linked brand which offers tactile organic sterling silver rings that have been sand cast with beach sand. Using a unique technique to create this effect, these rings feel like ancient relics that have been discovered at the bottom of the ocean.

Then Macramé, which incidentally was a “thing” in the Victorian era, made hugely popular in the 1960’s and 70’s, has started its fourth come-back into fashion. And it’s a fascinating craft. Visit Knotagain Macramé to see their amazing Tree of Life wall hanging, which will be the talking-point at this month’s market. The craftsmanship gone into this phenomenal piece will leave you breathless. But if that’s too big for your home - not to worry there are plenty of simply gorgeous smaller pieces for sale, too.

While reminiscing - Abby River has a beautiful and simple winter collection, of “old-fashioned-inspired” cotton children’s clothes in natural palettes – a reminder of days gone by when life was, well, simpler!

Of course, there is so much more from décor and furnishings, clothes, and accessories, to loads of delectable food to take home - preserves, condiments, pastries, bread, biltong. And bonus – you can catch up with friends and make new ones in the sociable dining area, where you can try out a big variety of healthy and interesting cuisine, made as always, with love.

The market on the lawns of the Moses Mabhida Stadium is open from 08h30 to 14h00. The entrance is free and dogs on leashes are welcome.

UDODANA: REVIEW#2

Poetry in Motion, Dreaming of Sons and Fathers... (Review by Verne Rowin Munsamy)

Award winning choreographer, dancer and Artistic Director of Mhayisa Productions, Musa Hlatshwayo, returns to the Playhouse New Stages with Udodana. It has been a while since I was treated to his unique style of choreography, poetry in motion, and yesterday appeased my appetite for African Contemporary Dance at the New Stages festival with his latest offering.

Hlatshwayo is renowned for his unique ability to tell African stories through Contemporary Dance. His dance works often utilise multiple spaces and focal points and Udodana is no different, occupying a few spaces creating myriad focal points. The dancers sometimes mirror the choreography in canon or juxtapose a solo with pair and trio work. The use of drums enhances a ritualistic ambiance.

Udodana is a piece that reflects on the bond between father and son and a son reminiscent of his father after his funeral. Memories of church gatherings, white lilies and touch or lack thereof are ever-present in the choreography. The futuristic looking costumes with a chair strapped to the back, with glow sticks are representative of the dreamlike state that embodies you after loss. The sense of void is solidified in the numerous empty bottles shrew across the stage and worn as a scarf, thus immortalising this feeling of isolation and untenancy that one burdens on their shoulders.

The cast of 10 men, Musa Hlatshwayo, Lungelo Mkhize, Njabulo Zungu, Sifiso Mathibela, Sbusiso Ngcobo, Cebo Mthembu, Sphakeme Shangase, Tebogo Mncwabe, Brilliant Mthethwa and Sanele Ximba are astonishing in their stamina, strength and synergy. I always revel in Hlatshwayo's style of fast-moving hands, strong leg work and risky leaps and catches.

No matter where your focal point rested, you are treated to impeccable movement and expression. This is a wonderful fusion of African traditional dance with a contemporary flair. Look out for it if it comes your way. This is a must see for all Contemporary Dance enthusiasts. - Verne Rowin Munsamy

IMPOSSIBLE! : REVIEW

(Right: Brendon Peel)

Last night I enjoyed a highly entertaining evening at the Rhumbelow Theatre watching Brendon Peel’s show “IMPOSSIBLE!”.

And “impossible” is just about the right word that comes to mind when he does his amazing mentalist sequences. How does he do it???

Quite honestly, forget that question and just enjoy the show. Mentalist Peel is an engaging, fast-talking entertainer and the audience – of all ages – responded enthusiastically to him. Especially a number of bright and intelligent youngsters who were only too happy to join him on stage, impressing us all with their confidence and intelligence.

Only 29, he already has an considerable list of achievements under his belt – he’s been on Britain's Got Talent, got a standing ovation on Romania's Got Talent, appeared on the Travel Channel, and has a busy schedule ahead including performing on a cruise liner.

He describes his shows as the interactive engaging of the magic of the mind – ie “getting into your head”.

The audience is quick to respond when he asks for volunteers to answer questions. The person chosen could be asked to think of a city in the world or a song but are required not to tell anyone else the answer. He assures the audience that there is no set-up or collusion and the process whereby he reveals the correct answers is filled with humour and ironic comment.

Well-known for doing puzzles from an early age, his favourite is the Rubik's Cube and his young volunteer handled the inter-action with aplomb.

So, if you have youngsters (I would suggest 9 upwards), then take them along to see the show. If you don’t have any – then borrow some! Especially if they are fascinated by numbers.

There are two more performances: tonight (Saturday) at 19h00 and tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon at 14h00). (Venue opens 90 minutes before show for snacks/drinks)

Tickets R160 (R100 under 13). Booking is essential on email: roland@stansell.co.za or through Computicket.

UDODANA: REVIEW

The dancers moved freely yet controlled by the expressiveness of the choreography, with strong neutral connection to one another, which aided the piece with a crucial layer; communication. (Review by Philisiwe Twijnstra)

Udodana is a dance piece choreographed by Musa Hlatshwayo, presented by the Playhouse Company for New Stages.

A confrontational performance that allows the audience to be drawn in; the closeness makes one want to pause and catch a breath, and forces one to retire in figuring out where to focus because the stage is split in four sections.

The audience were seated in a mirroring format surrounding the four-square split stage. The set-up is intentional, it adds to the complexities around masculinity and manhood, which these are the themes explored by Udodana.

The dancers moved freely yet controlled by the expressiveness of the choreography, with strong neutral connection to one another, which aided the piece with a crucial layer; communication.

The performance dance probes the depth of discovering self - I’m sure those who watched Udodana, would concur that the choreography is a layered experience not to be understood but to be lived in.

It questions the conditioning and norms of what a man is understood to be; but also, what it means when one chooses to redefine themselves for self, and whether it makes them less of a man?

The dance piece has moments in the choreography that makes one feel swallowed and trapped in a heartbeat of a warrior—while experiencing every sweat and heart-pounding of the drum, a powerful and excruciating crescendo so much so that silence becomes a much-needed bliss.

The dancers playfully balance eloquence and danger in their high jumps, and with intention they masterfully "imperfected" their kicks and transported their bodies to carefully tell the story. Visually, Hlatshwayo created an impressive dance sequence by situating the dancers on the single stage to feed and contrast and play with balance between soft and hard.

Hlatshwayo masterfully creates an exploration of manhood around social, cultural, and historical discourse. A notable element is the use of silence allowing the dancers to breathe, wipe their sweat, this gave such an impressive language to carve as they navigate through masculinity.

I find that the exploration of rest is crucial when parallel to man and manhood; can a man rest? Show exhaustion? Can a man take time and breath?

What was beautiful about Udodana was the subtle use of memory, and images; the marbles inside the bottles carried the memory of being a boy child. Udodana is embedded with stories we have undoubtedly kept hidden. A dance conversation that a father and son shouldn’t miss.

There are two more performances in the Playhouse Grand Foyer – tonight (May 27) at 19h30 and tomorrow (May 28) at 14h00. Tickets R90 booked at WebTickets. – Philisiwe Twijnstra

The exciting and beautifully crafted feature, The First Last Tour, produced by Azania Productions (Blessers, Mr Johnson), has been picked up by Amazon Prime Video and is currently streaming on the service.

Directed by the multi-talented David Kau (Taxi Ride, Blitspatrollie), written by Marinus Gubitz (Vlugtig, Onortokods) and Rorisang Motuba (Vutha, The Impostor), The First Last Tour was shot on location in Johannesburg and is produced by the late Malebo Manamela.

Stefan, a young wannabe rapper hits rock bottom when his career tanks, his girlfriend leaves him, he’s homeless, his only family is a drug dealing brother and, to top it all, he learns that the woman he had a one-night stand with is pregnant with his child. With all his hardships playing out on social media, Stefan sees suicide as the only way out. Enter a group of angels led by the raven-haired Ella, determined to save him from himself.

This fast-paced, unconventional road movie, set in contemporary South Africa, looks at the pressures faced by young adults trying to negotiate their way in what is often a complicated and unforgiving world. It shows that, no matter the hardship, there is always light at the end of the tunnel, sometimes it just requires a new perspective.

The First Last Tour is a perfect vehicle for our company,” says Aimee Dherman, producer at Azania Productions. “We are constantly looking for exciting, new, young voices and different genres to add to our slate of titles. Marinus Gubitz is a very talented, fresh voice and a great storyteller. We are proud of this little film that enchants and offer inspiration and hope.”

The film stars Marinus Gubitz, Tarryn Wyngaard (Arendsvlei, Waterfront), Bonko Khoza (Necktie Youth) and featuring Rouge, Nadia Nakai and Siya Seya.
