THE SCENT OF CHANGE: REVIEW

The immense optimism that young people have in our hard-won democracy must never be taken for granted. (Review by Dr Ismail Mahomed)

Durban can wear its scars with grace because the wounds under its skin are not septic. It is healing.

This was the message that lit the stage at the Courtyard Theatre at the Durban University of Technology when more than 40 third-year students in Drama and Production Studies Department took to the stage last night for their final performance of The Scent Of Change.

Scripted and directed by Verne Munsamy with musical direction by Zenneth Chibane and choreography by Mdu Mtshali The Scent Of Change is a necessary reminder about why our fragile democracy needs to be nursed with compassion, empathy and understanding.

More than anything else, the production is a joyous celebration about why our country's Born Free Generation need to know about our country's past but not have to be burdened with having to carry its baggage. This was affirmed so very strongly by its young audience who could not but resist in joining the cast in a song and dance at the production's curtain call.

The Scent Of Change is set in the late 1980's and the early 1990's when apartheid was losing its grip and the schooling system was cautiously walking towards desegregation. Tensions in privileged schools was rather high. Verne Munsamy sets his musical in the heart of a public school in Chatsworth. What follows is a collage of how racism, bigotry, hatred and distrust fuelled by Durban's January 1949 riots had been carried inter-generationally and was further fuelled by the National government's apartheid policies.

Munsamy's all-African cast play a collage of colourful Indian characters that are so very recognisable. His characters don traditional Indian costumes that make each of these characters look so much like the next-door aunty or uncle. And when they open their mouths, it is not only what they have to say that leaves you wanting to run away from recognition but it is the hilarious Indian accents mastered by his all-African casts that hits you with thunderbolts of hilarity.

The Scent Of Change doesn't stay stuck in that bitter past. It is a story about empathy, love, romance, pain and resilience. It has a bottomline Chatsworth and Umlazi-styled Romeo and Juliet twist to it. The musical is not a Shakespeare reincarnated. Neither is it a Sheikh Peer having flashbacks. And most certainly it’s not a story about reigniting the hatred that Jacob Zuma had tried to reinsurrect during the political violence in KZN.

This was a story about Born Frees who are anchored to their roots where their mothers, fathers and grandparents carry generational trauma and pain. It is a story about Born Frees whose hearts and minds can critically reflect on our past but not dwell in it. And if one had to look at the production with an eye only for artistic aesthetics then sadly the boundless joy on that stage would escape one.

The immense optimism that young people have in our hard-won democracy must never be taken for granted. We just need to persuade them to go to the polls because our fragile democracy can easily slip back into our horrid past if they don't do so. – Ismail Mahomed

THE SCENT OF CHANGE

The  Durban University of Technology's Drama and Production Studies Department is proud to present The Scent of Change.

Written and directed by Dr Verne Rowin Munsamy, musical direction by Zenneth Cibane, with musical producer Niwake Jama, and choreographed by Mdu Mtshali.

The production is part of the third year Performance Techniques module which navigates a Departmental Production in which students get a chance to experience a professional platform for Performance in their final year of their diploma.

This year's production is a collaborative effort that brings to the stage a brand new South African musical that weaves together a romantic love story in a historical time in our country, pre-democracy, where the waters of integration were testing in the public schools of Chatsworth.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, integration between Black and Indian learners was experimented with when small groups of Black learners were introduced into Indian schools to see if integration would be possible after almost 40 years of segregation.

The story navigates the romantic love story of Preshni, a teenage Indian girl, top of her class and James, a young Black student who is introduced into the Indian school. It conveys the uncertainty and prejudice that existed at the time but also the lingering hope of a united country.

The Scent of Change runs at the Courtyard Theatre, DUT from October 28 to 31 nightly, with a 14h00 show on October 30.

Tickets R50 (R30 students, pensioners and children) available through secretary Bawinile at 031 373 2194, email: BawinileM1@dut.ac.za or at the door.

VOCALIST ZETHE LAUNCHES NEW SINGLE

(Left: Vocalist Zethe by Lonwabo Zimela. Pic supplied)

Vocalist Zethe launches new single Abantu: A Call For Humanity, Unity And Compassion

South African vocalist Zethe unveils her latest single, Abantu a deeply moving anthem urging unity, compassion, and a return to our shared humanity.

Drawing from the philosophy of Ubuntu, which teaches that "I am because we are" Zethe’s new track is a timely reminder of kindness, compassion and humanity.

Zethe’s gentle and peaceful vocals and emotive lyrics propel the listener to look past individual differences to the core values of Ubuntu. Zethe believes that the exercise of ubuntu begins with the loving perspective of each other and that its triumph requires a collective effort. Similarly, “It takes more effort to hold onto anger than it does to extend compassion,” says Zethe.

The lyrics and message of this song further proclaim the depth of Ubuntu as a herb for most kinds of people's social ills.  Hence, Abantu embodies healing and restoration qualities.

Abantu isn’t just a song—it’s a movement. Let’s take this message of compassion and unity into our daily lives and make healing a shared experience.” says Zethe.

Originally from Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, Zethe blends jazz, soul, and African urban traditional sounds to create music that advocates for mental health and social justice.

Now based in Johannesburg, she graduated with a Jazz degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2016. Since then, she has performed at major South African events like the SAMAs and DSTV Delicious Festival. In 2017, she won the Vodacom Nxt Lvl competition, booting her career. Her debut single Zazi and EP Qhawekazi which were released in 2018, reflected her focus on healing and empowerment.

MITH OCTOBER 23 2024

(Right: Erin Fourie)

Arguably the KZN Midlands’ best-loved music venue, Music in The Hills (MiTH) is an opportunity for beginners, professionals, and passionate music fans to share the joy of music at The Knoll Historic Guest Farm.

MiTH takes place every second Wednesday at The Knoll Historic Guest Farm, Knoll Drive, Hilton.

Doors open at 18h00 and the music will kick off at 19h00. Entrance is R50 at the door. Food and soft drinks are available for sale. A cash bar is available.

The next function will take place tomorrow (October 23)

20h40: Erin Fourie

Erin Fourie is a Midlands-based musician who first began working the KZN music scene in 2003. Her love of music was cultivated from a young age, and she began playing guitar at 13 in her high school music club.

With an Honours in Drama and Performance Studies from UKZN Pietermaritzburg, and later working ad hoc for the Hexagon Theatre, Erin was afforded the opportunity to perform in several musical productions and many dinner theatre music shows at the Hexagon Theatre and the Hexagon Dive under the direction of Peter Mitchell. She was a regular entertainer at Hebron Haven Hotel for 15 years, as well as at private functions, restaurants, pubs, and music clubs.

Further afield, her achievements include being a top 10 Idols contestant in 2011 and playing Sister Berthe in the Durban Playhouse's 2016 production of The Sound of Music. Erin’s style is rooted in acoustic folk, pulling the songs she likes to play from many genres, and she can often be found playing at the Karkloof Farmer’s Market.

(Left: Andrew Versfeld)

 19h40: Andrew Versfeld

Andrew B Versfeld is a multi-instrumentalist well versed in piano, guitar, drums, and clarinet. He has dabbled in many genres but has ultimately settled on blues and folk. Over the past 15 years, he has played in various bands and collaborated with various artists.

He began his career in Howick, busking and playing at various flea markets. Then he moved to the Drakensberg, where he became a regular pianist for Dragon Peaks Restaurant, playing gentle blues and soulful jazz while patrons dined. While there, he became a founding member of the Mountain Music Club.

From humble beginnings to touring around Kwa-Zulu Natal, Andrew eventually moved back to Howick to set up a studio where he currently produces albums, composes film scores and runs a YouTube channel.

Andrew’s piano playing has been described as warm and relaxed blues with a little bit of spicy jazz. He loves George Gershwin, Burt Bacharach, Ray Charles, and Billy Joel.

(Right: Alan Strang)

 19h00: Alan Strang

Alan returns solo to the MiTH stage after an absence of a couple of years. He will bring along a miscellany of songs which are dear to him: some old, some new, but invariably melodious.

Being a native of Scotland, he was strongly influenced by Scottish, Celtic, and pop and rock genres.

As a long-term resident of South Africa, his musical taste has broadened considerably, helped by involvement with the Buskers and TJs Folk Clubs in Johannesburg (and by regular attendance at MiTH, of course!).

From this, many collaborations resulted, with appearances at festivals, including Four Winds in PE, Barleycorn in Cape Town and many of the early events at Splashy Fen.

Alan was lucky enough to record many CDs and DVDs with the Waldorf String Band, initially as a backing vocalist, but in its latter years, as a fully-fledged band member. He recorded his first and only solo album, Reflections of a Dreamer, 30 years ago, on cassette tape (remember those?). You can find this and the Waldorf String Band recordings on iTunes and YouTube.

BEAUTIFUL HEALING.AT JOMBA: REVIEW

(Above: KwaMashu School of Dance Theatre perform at  JOMBA!. Choreography Vusi Makanya)

The three pieces overall were perfectly executed and brought much jubilation to the audiences. I was memorised by the technical execution of dance, the diverse styles and rhythms and the strength and stamina of the dancers. (Review by Dr Verne Rowin Munsamy)

The Centre for Creative Arts proudly presents six festivals a year and JOMBA! is an acclaimed one that has won several awards for its ground-breaking contributions to theatre and culture.

The Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, nestled in the Howard College Campus has been a proud home for the festival since its inception. Contemporary dance has endured a long history in South Africa. JOMBA! is testament to this genre of dance and this year marks the 26th anniversary of the festival.

One of the longest-running contemporary dance festivals in the world, the festival ignites a passion in artists to create thought-provoking dance works that question aspects of life in a critical manner using the full extent of the human body. This year the theme is Home, questioning what is home and where one belongs and finds a place to call a refuge in light of the displacement that people have felt due to war and genocide, seeking to leave or return to a 'Home'.

My favourite part of the festival is the opening speech delivered by Dr Lliane Loots who holds the title of creative director of the festival. Her provocative word always forces artists out of their comfort zone and makes us see the world with a critical eye and reminds us why we became artists in the first place, to create awareness and challenge through performance.

This year's festival brings artists from Japan, South Africa, France, United States of America, India and Germany together to perform on the same platform. And this year the festival leaves the province to venture to Johannesburg's Market Theatre. This year, special mention was made of Wesley Maherry who has been the Production Manager for 15 years.

Dr Loots, in her speech, asked us to push into the pain to find realignment. A statement that speaks true to many artists who challenge social norms despite the painful repercussions that follow.

The three dance pieces of the night were presented by Cape Town based company, Jazz Art, who celebrated 50 years of existence in 2023. The first piece, costumed in a warn orange colour, showcased the sophisticated synchronisation of the company. It represents the notion of what it means to be South African with our diverse multicultural nation and exemplified the notion of finding our roots. It embodied the warm and inviting caress of home.

The second piece, in warm brown earthy tones depicted grounded movement that place the audience in thoughts of home as a foundation for us to leap towards our dreams and goals. The amalgamation of several dance forms reminded us of the unison that is discovered in our rainbow nation.

The final piece concretised the harmonious synergy between the seven dancers on stage. The black costumes symbolised the darkness that sometime exists in our homes. The three pieces overall were perfectly executed and brought much jubilation to the audiences. I was memorised by the technical execution of dance, the diverse styles and rhythms and the strength and stamina of the dancers. This certainly was a great opening to the 13-day festival.

As usual, the festival takes place in several locations and also offers workshops for the public to attend. I certainly hope that the festival is well supported and that we all relish in the critical dance that pushes boundaries and allows us to find healing through dance. - Dr Verne Rowin Munsamy

1000 HILLS TOURISM CELEBRATES SPRING GARDENS

To celebrate spring, there will be the second annual glorious Garden Fair at Vuleka Conference Centre in Botha’s Hill on the weekend October of 25 to 27, supported by 1000 Hills Tourism.

To plan for spring, when garden preparation starts in earnest, a selection of growers; nurseries; retailers; garden product suppliers; manufacturers; landscapers; and those involved in the garden industry have been invited to showcase their wares and services in a farm-type setting catering for those with a tiny green space, patio, window box or indoor garden; to those with larger properties and subsistence farmers.  Provision will be made to promote water-wise gardens.

Garden Fair 2024 has come about after a hugely successful inaugural event held last year after numerous requests from growers and gardeners for an opportunity to showcase, buy and sell plants and products in the light of the Royal Show Grounds in Pietermaritzburg no longer being available for the Witness Garden Show – which was always a calendar highlight.

1000 Hills Tourism has partnered to assist in marketing the new Garden Fair to be held at the spacious and accessible grounds of the tranquil Vuleka Trust Conference Centre - a stone’s throw away from 1000 Hills Chef School and Pot and Kettle.

Understanding that now is the time to get your garden summer ready, 1000 Hills Tourism invite garden lovers to visit the Garden Fair to consider creating a plant and garden-themed self-drive 1000 Hills meander by also visiting some extensive nurseries in the Valley of 1000 hills - such as Potting Shed Garden Centre at Pot & Kettle; Ludwig’s Star Roses; MacNut Farm (especially their Sunday Fresh Produce Market); Shongweni Market; Stonehouse; Woza Moya; Pilgrim's Rest; the Mushroom Farm; Fig Tree Farm and over the Heritage weekend while Umgeni Steam Railway is running, visit Inchanga Craft Market at Inchanga Station which has stalls selling plants.

The market takes place on October 25, 26 and 27. The fair is open 08h30 until 16h00 daily

Tickets R30 (R10 OAP. Children U13)

Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.

YESTERDAY’S HERO

(Patrick Kenny. Pic supplied)

Rhumbelow Theatre presents Yesterday’s Hero directed by multi-award-winning comedian Aaron McIlroy and written by & starring 2020 Ovation winner Patrick Kenny.

Shows take place on November 2 at 19h30 and Sunday November 3 at 14h00. Venue opens 90 minutes before show.

Yesterday’s Hero is a hilarious one-man play about surviving and hanging on in-spite of the misfortunes and disappointments that life throws at you. It’s a semi-biographical story about the ups and downs of actor, writer and director Patrick Kenny. From his days as a comedian on East Coast Radio to playing dodgy Doctor Wallace on eTV’s soapie Imbewu.

After surviving cancer in 2019, Covid in 2020 and political riots in 2021, Patrick decided, while recuperating in a government hospital from a very painful haemorrhoids operation in 2022, to go back and perform a one-man play at the National Arts Festival after a 25-year hiatus.

With the help and encouragement of his wife Shannon and friends, Aaron and Lisa McIlroy, Yesterday’s Hero was created. Loosely based on Patrick’s career and life, the story follows our hero as he bounces from fame to misfortune and back again in the pinball machine of life.

It’s filled with hilarious stories. Some true, some almost true. Like how he really got the lead role in the famous 1998 New York Castle Lager tv advert or how he and his wife briefly become champions for the Latvian cause against Russian oppression.

Yesterday’s Hero - it’s about being ALMOST famous!

So, follow minor “celebrity” Patrick as he moves up and down the snakes and ladders of fame and fortune. From ECR drive-time comedian to pushing a beer trolley in the New York Castle Lager tv advert and finally as Dr Wallace on eTV’s soapie Imbewu.

Directed by multi-award-winning comedian Aaron McIlroy and written by and starring 2020 Ovation winner Patrick Kenny.

Dr Ismail Mahomed’s review when the show played Seabrooke’s Theatre in June 2024:

“In Yesterday’s Hero, Patrick Owen Kenny is a ridiculously marvellous raconteur. Both his physical presence on stage and biographical narrative is larger than life. He is so funny that you keep guessing between what is really true and where an over-stretched imagination has scripted this outrageously hilarious work. If ever there was a formula to write an autobiography that can tickle every single funny bone then certainly Patrick Kenny has mastered the art.”

Tickets R160 (R100 students/scholars). Booking is essential on email please to roland@stansell.co.za or WEBTICKETS or http://events.durbantheatre.com/

Bring food picnic baskets or buy at the venue. Bar available (no alcohol may be brought on to the premises)
