ECHOES OF MARABI

 

Taking place on September 30 at the Centre for Jazz at UKZN, Echoes of Marabi brings together South Africa’s rich musical heritage and contemporary influences from Johannesburg to Bern.

Led by South African pianist and vocalist Yonela Mnana and Swiss saxophonist and bass clarinetist Benedikt Reising, the ensemble features The Soultee Sisters — Happiness Siyoko, Busisiwe Shongwe and Nompumelelo Gugu Kubheka — with Swiss drummer Rico Baumann joining for the performances.

Drawing on marabi, choral traditions and contemporary jazz, the project celebrates musical exchange, resilience and connection between South Africa and Switzerland.
