The Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal presents the 42nd edition of South Africa’s longest-running film festival, the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF), which will take place from July 22 to August 1, 2021. The festival is widely regarded as one of the leading film festivals on the African continent and a vital event on the international film calendar.

Durban International Film Festival opened for submissions by filmmakers of their feature films, documentaries and shorts in February, 2021, and has received an impressive amount of 2,500 films thus far. Head of programming, Chipo Zhou, will be supported by 10 film industry stalwarts who will watch and select films that will get a spot on the DIFF2021 line-up.

Programming team

Since 2017, Chipo Zhou has worked as the Durban International Film Festival's Head of Programming and Curator. For nearly a decade and a half, Zhou has worked in the film industry in various capacities. She is a member of the Short Film Conference Board of Directors and previously served on the Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe Board of Directors. She has served on several local and international film festival juries and project selection panels for the Talents Durban and Realness Projects, respectively.

The festival's theme is Framing the Future, Cinema Unleashed, and DIFF is searching for films that provide concrete strategies for adapting to our complex and ever-changing world. Chipo Zhou, festival curator, says, "We are very excited about the quality of submissions, and the team is sure that we will have a diverse and engaging event this year. The programming team mainly comprises experts from across the continent as a way to better diversify the programme and promote pan-African collaboration. The Festival has also partnered with several organisations that are working in production and will be curating some special projects from the continent that focus on and provide hope for the future of mankind.

The documentaries will be selected by a South African team headed by film festival programmer, television producer, and documentary film advisor Lesedi Oluko Moche (SA). Filmmaker Berry Hahn (MAD/SA) and film- and television producer Lesedi Siswana (SA) will join this team as reviewers.

BASA ASSEMBLY DRAWS CREATIVE AND BUSINESS SECTORS TOGETHER

(ASSEMBLY exclusive preview of ONDA by HAN SúN Gathering/The People United ASBL and hannahmadance in collaboration with Sebastian Purfürst)

Complex conversations and the stirrings of systemic change were the hallmarks of the inaugural Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) ASSEMBLY held from March 24–26, 2021, and presented in partnership with British Council Southern Africa Arts. The fully digital, free event comprised a series of discussions, podcasts, presentations, and live panels to address the urgent challenges facing a beleaguered arts sector. It remains online for further exploration at https://basa.co.za

Running across three streams (or topic groups) – BUSINESS + RESEARCH, ARTISTS + GRANTS and MARKETING & CULTURAL POLICY – the programme was focused on defining the current context, identifying the urgent and long-term needs of the creative sector, and understanding how the arts and business could better work together.

A highlight of the ASSEMBLY was BASA Board Chairman Charmaine Soobramoney’s welcome address to attendees, where she rallied for the continued sector-wide financial support for creatives who continue to need assistance as a result of the pandemic’s impact on their income streams. Reflecting ASSEMBLY’s primary theme of promoting actionable outcomes, Charmaine took the opportunity to launch BASA’s Chairman’s Fund.

"The last year has seen unmatched challenges, but it has also been a year when our community has demonstrated equally unrivalled levels of benefaction to our peers. As BASA continues our own efforts to offer relief, we encourage you to do the same. There are several options available to you, whether you’re considering supporting our ongoing Artist Relief efforts or contributing to the new BASA Chairman’s Fund, which I am proud to launch today. The purpose of this fund is to raise support for a worthy cause, identified by the BASA Chairman on an annual basis. You can help me by donating as little as R20, when you log on to ASSEMBLY, via the BASA website."

BASA’s biennial research publication ArtsTrack No 9 was also released at the event. The findings are made available to members of BASA, but Madeleine Lambert, BASA’s Head of Research conducted a presentation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rqbjdTOuaE) * on the outcomes.

Across the board, the event acknowledged that cross-sector collaboration could add up to much more than merely CSI initiatives, rewarding all parties through a process of mutual respect, a fundamental condition of engagement between the arts and business.

Research was identified as a vital component of success, both in terms of measuring risk and audience appetite, and to enable corporates to evaluate the impact of their investment in the arts. Currently, only a small number of corporate companies in South Africa have consistently invested in the arts space, although those who have were clear about the mutual benefits – and did forge partnerships with businesses that were willing to work alongside their objectives while allowing for freedom of expression. Companies needed to interrogate their intent when working with the arts.

A common theme across the conversations was the need for artists to find ways to be more business-minded without sacrificing their integrity and creativity. Funders were also identified as important partners towards enabling the arts to do their own research, making their offering more tangible and apparent, and successful case studies of ‘fundable’ projects illustrate the need to manage the business end of any creative endeavour. Many systemic challenges prevail in South Africa and access remains challenging in this environment. Upskilling and mentoring artists in this context becomes a priority if the country is to leverage true transformation in the arts. BASA ASSEMBLY also presents a collection of resources https://assembly.basa.co.za/resources/ for artists, which includes an economic impact calculator and reports from various investment and research partners.

Says BASA CEO Ashraf Johaardien, “It was evident that the freedom of an artist to form their own unique expression, critique and question, challenge and surprise remains imperative but, as big brands face a market that is highly sensitised to ethics and authenticity, the arts – and indeed the processes used by artists – becomes a valuable asset to assist businesses in developing more honest and interesting brands and finding new approaches to connecting with their own audiences.”

The programme for BASA ASSEMBLY was co-curated by Savannah Feeke-Fortune (BASA Head of Marketing), Boitumelo ‘Tumy’ Motsoatsoe (BASA Head of Programmes) and Madeleine Lambert (BASA Head of Research). The full programme can be viewed https://basa.co.za/downloads/BASA_Assembly_01_Programme.pdf

Highlights of the event include:

The Keynote Address from youth and African cultural trends navigator Dali Tembo, and a presentation by researcher and independent cultural/media worker Johanna Mavhungu, Between The State And The Market, which explored cultural policy, marketing and creative ideation.

A recording of the webinar Bula Sekele: Make The Circle Bigger, explores navigating access, inclusion and diversity in the South African creative sector funding landscape. Another webinar, Data-Driven, is a webinar on research and investment in the creative sector; and BASA revealed its ArtsTrack No 9 research findings in The Inside Track, presented by Madeleine Lambert.

Artist Lee-Ann van Rooi put an artist’s perspective forward in Now We’re Talking, and Sylvia Akach was in conversation with international marketing leader Les Green about Entrepreneurial marketing leadership. In Conversation, Jumpstarting Impact Investment in the Creative Economy, saw Kate Gardner interview Fran Sanderson, who leads the Arts & Culture Investments and Programmes team at the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (Nesta), a UK-based innovation foundation.

BASA CEO Ashraf Johaardien held a conversation with Professor Andrea Rurale (Università Bocconi) about Cultural Intelligence https://youtu.be/tWfDjN-yQjE?t=2017 in the current context and how data and research can assist businesses in building an arts funding strategy.

The models and realities of business and creative sector engagements were discussed in a panel called Cross-Sector Creative Collaborations, and for those who’ve been in the trenches with that elusive balance between brand and creativity paid witness to some of these burning issues.

The event was enriched by the experience of works from artists and performers like musical performance Just Kids, performed by Kiruna-Lind Devar, and composed by Stephen Anthony Haiden, and Kiruna-Lind Devar; dance piece ONDA, choreographed by Hannah Ma and performed by Christin Reinartz, Hannah Ma and Sergio Mel, and a poetic provocation https://youtu.be/Dnbnp5TfOPc by vangile gantsho

SHONGWENI FARMERS & CRAFT MARKET

The Shongweni Farmers & Craft Market was established by the Standeaven family in 1998, who dreamed of starting a weekly farmers market to help local farmers move surplus stock.

From its humble beginnings of only 12 stalls on an open field at the Shongweni Polo Club, the market grew rapidly. Over the years, it has evolved to include crafts, live music and much more. It is now a staple weekend outing for a great deal of local families, and a popular destination for people far and wide.

What draws people each week is the unique ambiance. The fact that you can buy products directly from the producer, the safe and friendly environment, the professional management and above all the feeling of being a part of a community. It’s a rare combination, which undeniably makes this the most authentic market around.

With the opportunity to bring along the entire family, including your pets – not to mention sampling and learning about products directly from the manufacturer when the opportunity arises. Come rain or shine, this market is open. It caters for everyone being completely wheelchair friendly. There are also dedicated kids zones scattered throughout the market.

The Shongweni Farmers & Craft Market is a weekly market that runs every Saturday from 06h30 to 12h30 – there is also a Meet the Artist platform where they showcase local artists once a month (the first Saturday of every month).

For more information phone 031 777 4686 or visit https://www.shongwenimarket.co.za/

HUMAN RIGHTS THROUGH SONG

A concert not to be missed is Human Rights Through Song, scheduled for May 15, 2021, in the auditorium at the Stable Theatre in Durban.

Raphael Vilakazi is collaborating with other opera singers to bring music lovers a concert titled Human Rights through Song at the Stable Theatre on May 15 2021, and the concert will start at 15h00. There will be a live stream of the concert on various social media platforms.

The concert is aimed at addressing issues of gender-based violence and child abuse through song, using opera music as a vehicle of delivering the message of “NO VIOLENCE TO WOMEN AND CHILDREN”.

Music has long been used as a medium to sensitise society about various issues and this concert is no exception, however, the focus and emphasis for the concert follow the theme of what has dominated much dialogue in the country lately; domestic violence, gender-based violence and child abuse. The creative concept for this project seeks to use music to sensitise our society about Human Rights, in particular the intention is to use our vocal abilities as opera singers to address the scourge of Gender Based Violence.

“A wide range of choral and opera music repertoire has been selected for this concert, and the cornerstone of our music repertoire are works composed by South African Composers, and we shall endeavour to ensure that the music is performed in our indigenous languages as an effort of uplifting and promoting our own mother tongue, which has been neglected a lot in choral and opera music,” says Vilakazi.

“You deserve a break! It’s been quite a busy three months and if you’re looking for some easy relaxation and next-level entertainment, this week’s DStv line-up is the perfect dish to accompany your downtime,” say the DStv organisers.

There’s plenty of drama and intrigue leading up to the long weekend. Keep the little ones busy on Saturday afternoon with a fun, fairytale film: The Swan Princess: Kingdom of Music airs on M-Net (DStv channel 101) and has enough adventure and magic for the entire family to enjoy. When Princess Odette decides to host a musical competition to celebrate Princess Alise’s birthday, her plans are put on hold when Princess Mei Li asks for help to free Chen from a curse that has turned him into a dragon.

M-Net’s Sunday night blockbuster doesn’t disappoint either with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence teaming up once more to fight crime on Miami’s streets in Bad Boys for Life. This time around, they join forces with the Miami Police Department's special team AMMO to take down a ruthless mother-and-son duo of drug lords wreaking havoc.

ROAD TRIPPIN’ WITH THE GRUMPY OLD HOMOS

(Right: Trevor Harper & Mark Hawkins)

Well-known to be grumpy for most of their lives, Johannesburg old friends and colleagues musician Trevor Harper and choreographer Mark Hawkins (formerly based in Durban) found themselves in a deep dark place at the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdown in March 2020 after realizing that all scheduled work would be cancelled. So to get themselves out of this space they decided to create The Grumpy Old Homos for some fun and to keep each other sane.

So, on May 18 they launched their 1st episode on Facebook making Peanut Butter biscuits for 2-legged and 4-legged people! Having started just with their cellphones and a borrowed GoPro, editor Mark Buyskes and publicist Bridget van Oerle of BUZ Publicity came on board, and 15 weekly episodes followed. The rest is history, as they say!

After a brand strategy meeting with SPACE TM and an impromptu interview on ilovemelville.live they got offered a twice-weekly slot on the local online radio station. The Grumpy Old Homo Show soon became the #1 show on the station. Live streaming of the show soon followed for every show with an incredible global audience platform. They targeted specific topics bringing people together for stimulating interviews on a broad number of subjects and featured news-making luminaires from all over the globe, with a strong community-building feel and always with a dose of their madness thrown in for good measure!

At the end of 2020, the GOH took a recess to look at their brand and where they wanted to take it in the future and so … due to public demand, they have decided to do this Road Tripping with The Grumpy Old Homos season since you’ve asked for more.

The Caravan Park Tour will take them all on a trip around South Africa from Johannesburg to the Mother City and back again (of course!)

“In order to make this season possible they need investors. For as little as 100 Randellas you can help them do this!” says Mark Hawkins. “Along the way they will introduce you to places you would want to put on your bucket list of destinations you would love to discover and will also introduce you to places you know you would NEVER want to experience…EVER!

“The exciting news is that we’ve partnered with the Theatre Benevolent Fund to continue raising the plight of South African creatives, and to support the valuable work they do in providing unstinted support to members of the creative industry when they need it most."

THE BROADWAY REVUE

(Above: Lisa Bobbert, Rory Booth & Lyle Buxton are among the stars of the show)

The bright lights of Broadway are coming to The Playhouse Company this March in a high-energy musical performance: The Broadway Revue.

The Broadway Revue is a deliciously off-beat mix of some of Broadway's most popular showstoppers featuring a line-up of KZN's best musical talent including Haylea Heyns, Rory Booth, Thabile Mtshali, Lisa Bobbert, Aaron McIlroy, Marion Loudon, Lyle Buxton and Tshepo Ngcocoane.

Devised and directed by Ralph Lawson, the show is a humorous “behind-the-scenes” peak at the lives of the characters - and the actors who perform them - in some of the best-known and well-loved productions that have made Broadway history, including Dear Evan Hansen, Chicago, Wicked, The Lion King, Les Misérables and Phantom Of The Opera, to name a few.

This performance will take place in the Playhouse Drama Theatre on March 31 at 19h00 and promises to provide an amazing spectacle that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Due to social distancing requirements, seats are limited. Tickets R100 and purchased online via WebTickets or via The Playhouse Box-Office.
